Etheridge recorded nine albums since he signed his contract in 1987. Three of them won the Multi-Platinum album: Melissa Etheridge (1988), Yes I Am (1993) and Your Little Secret (1995).
Etheridge won the award for Best Female Rock Singer in Grammy twice the songs “It’s not heavy” in 1992 and “Come to My Window” in 1994.
Etheridge is a fan of Bruce Springsteen, and has played some of his songs like “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run” during live concerts.
In October 2004, Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. Grammy in 2005, came on stage, but without hair due to chemotherapy, and singing “Piece of my Heart” by Janis Joplin. Etheridge was hailed by the music and considered one of the best performances of the night.
Etheridge admitted using marijuana as medicine when to chemotherapy. She said that marijuana is a better mood and appetite.
On September 10, 2005, Etheridge participated in “React Now: Music and Relaxation, a program for people affected by Hurricane Katrina. React Now: Music and Relaxation is part of the effort that made MTV, VH1, CMT, to raise funds for the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Famine of America. Etheridge made a song for the occasion which is entitled “Four Days”. This song acapella included images of the disaster of Hurricane Katrina.
On November 15, 2005, Etheridge appeared on the “Tonight Show” to sing “I run for life” which refers to his struggle for breast cancer and her determination to recover completely, and telling people who managed to recover and their families continue to struggle. After singing Jay Leno said, “Thanks for being a fighter.”
In the February 23, 2007, Etheridge received the Academy Award for original song “I Need To Wake Up”, which use the same song for Al Gore documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”
On February 25, 2007, won an Oscar for the same song against forecast, leaving the three nominations for the film Dreamgirls.
Etheridge is famous for defending the rights of gay and lesbian declared during the inauguration of Bill Clinton’s presidency in 1993.
Etheridge had a relationship years ago with Julie Cypher, who had two children, Bailey Jean, born in February 1997 and Beckett, born in November 1998, via sperm donated by David Crosby. Cypher announced their engagement, but in 2000, Cypher began to reconsider her sexuality. On September 19, 2000, Etheridge and Cypher announced they were separating.
In 2001, Etheridge document Cypher, and their separation from other experiences in his autobiography: “The truth is … My life in music and love.” The book says he was sexually abused at age five by his sister Jennifer and Julie had a relationship with Cynpher KD Lang.
After cutting with Cypher, Etherdige married in 2003 with actress Tammy Lynn Michaels. In October 2005, in honor of Breast Cancer Month, Etheridge appeared on NBC with Michaels line to count on their fight against breast cancer. When the interview was done, the hair had grown back, said his partner had supported during his illness.
